Bonnaire

As ever, we urge you to try "grower" Champagnes over branded ones. The quality can often be higher and the price can be lower, but just as importantly, you are supporting a small business rather than a large luxury goods conglomerate. The wines of Paul Clouet and Bonnaire outshine the supermarket big brands by such a degree that it is almost embarassing to taste them side by side. Don't take our word for it though, buy some and find out!

The Champagne BONNAIRE estate is settled in Cramant, south of Epernay, in the Côte des Blancs area, home of the Chardonnay, the most famous white grape of Champagne.

Fernand Bouquemont, the maternal grandfather of Jean-Louis Bonnaire made his first bottle there in 1932. It was the beginning of a great adventure which André Bonnaire, Fernand's son-in-law, undertook to develop the family vineyard which today covers more than 22 hectares.

The history of the Bonnaire house illustrates well the devotion, from generation to generation, to this particular spirit of a "Côte des Blancs" winegrower.

And Jean-Louis Bonnaire wants to do more. Not only does he give to his house name Champagnes that respect the tradition, but also Champagnes that fit contemporary vinification.

  1. Champagne Bonnaire Rose

    Champagne Bonnaire Rose

    £26.20

Fairly dark in colour and possessing a wonderfully full body, Bonnaire's pink is more than a match for the "big name brands".
  2. Champagne Bonnaire Grand Cru Blanc de Blanc

Champagne Bonnaire Grand Cru Blanc de Blanc

    £26.20

This Champagne offers a true glimpse of that elusive, up-market richness that allows some wines to command huge prices. The first impression is of ultra-clean freshness with a big hint of citrus. This is followed by a mid-palate power that almost suggests sweetness but just holds back. Beautiful wine.
  3. Champagne Bonnaire Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru Non Dose

Champagne Bonnaire Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru Non Dose

    £25.79

A bit of an oddity for the Champagne buffs amongst you. Non dosé means no sweetness is added during the dosage of the wine. None at all. Blanc de Blanc means it is 100% Chardonnay. To say this wine is dry is a wonderful understatement but the Grand Cru richness ensures that it never ever feels thin!
