A couple of years ago we planted a vine in the Gaol Lane Vineyard next to our shop in Sudbury. It's fairly young and probably needs a year or two more along with some vicious autumn pruning before the grapes are optimal but we did get a small crop in 2024.
We sent the harvest (done at night in September to preserve freshness) off to some friends near Maldon who have a proper winery attached to their vineyard and they have vinified the fruit into a small cuvée
Although we can't afford proper lab analysis, to the best of our knowledge the variety is "Red" with the fruit having a surprisingly dark skin which has translated into a deep garnet colour in the glass.
Just 7 bottles have been made and following a tasting of a tank sample with several experts and a group of journalists, we believe the wine to be as ready to drink now as it's going to be.
Production costs are high with this kind of quantity and so it's not cheap. It's also not very nice to drink but we are very proud of it.
